About me, personally

I’m so glad you’ve made it to this little internet portal between you and me. I hope you’ll find it a friendly place.

Here are some things you might want to know about me:

  • I was raised by vegan activists

  • I grew up with two older sisters who would sing while they walked down the street, and now I also sing while I walk down the street

  • I love to garden and make hot sauce, so I combine those loves by growing hot peppers and making hot sauce with them. I call it “vertical integration for the urban farmer.”

  • There’s nothing I love more than mountains, except for my husband and our one-eyed dog, Chico

About me, professionally

  • I sing tenor with The Crossing, a new music ensemble called “America’s most astonishing choir” by the New York Times. We won the 2023 Grammy Award for Best Choral Performance for our album, Born, with music by Edie Hill and Michael Gilbertson. My favorite recording of ours is The Arc in the Sky, an amazing setting of Robert Lax texts by composer Kile Smith, released in 2017.

  • I co-founded and co-direct the Uncommon Music Festival, an annual chamber music festival in Sitka, Alaska. We’ve commissioned works by composers such as Edie Hill, B.E. Boykin, Jonathan Woody, Conrad Winslow, all of which set poetry written by Sitkan or Alaskan writers.

  • I started my teaching career running the choral department at The Birch Wathen Lenox School in New York. Since then I’ve taught private lessons and workshops to people of all ages. I especially love to help people find their singing voices.

  • I compose music for a variety of mediums, including choral music, instrumental chamber music, music for theater, and music for film. I’m inspired by folk music, classical music, and the natural workings of the human voice.

  • I got my undergraduate degree at Yale University, where I studied Music Composition with Kathryn Alexander, Music Theory with Rick Cohn, and Music History with Anna Zayaruznaya. For my senior project I composed my first full-length choral work, “A Peace Prayer,” which won the music department’s 2015 award for best thesis.

  • I got my Master’s in Choral Conducting at Rutgers University. My graduate recital featured pieces by Caroline Shaw and George Walker, including several that had never been recorded.
