Study with Grammy-winning performer, educator, and composer, Nate Barnett

There are a lot of good reasons to take music lessons.

Maybe you’ve always wanted to sing or play piano, but you need a guide to help you find your way in.

Maybe you already love to sing, and you want to feel more powerful in your voice, learn to accompany yourself, or learn to read music.

Maybe you’re a music student and you need effective, rigorous instruction tailored to you.

Whatever the focus of study, I bring a holistic, goal-oriented approach that meets the unique needs, preferences, and skills of each student. My goal is to deepen every person’s connection to their innate musical ability.

What you can expect as a student in Barnett Music Studio

STUDIO-WIDE CURRICULUM

Students in the Barnett Music Studio participate in a studio-wide curriculum. Each month features a musical artist, concept, and piece of creative philosophy, all of which form a backdrop for individual practice.

MODULAR LESSON STRUCTURE

I structure lessons in modules that deepen your connection to all aspects of musicianship: the physical, the creative, the mental, the emotional. A typical lesson might include a check-in, a physical warm-up, song practice, guided listening, music literacy practice, discussing creativity, and setting new goals. We’ll work together to see what combination works best for you.

INDIVIDUALIZED COURSES OF STUDY

Before starting lessons, students fill out a thorough questionnaire designed to assess their unique interests and goals. The answers to this questionnaire are discussed at the free consultation, where an individualized course of study is established.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

If you’re a student with professional aspirations or are a professional musician, I can provide advice on leading a creative lifestyle, networking, professional development, financial management, and more, all drawn from personal experience. I bring practicality and sincere empathy to all my students.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • In the course of teaching hundreds of students, I’ve found myself working with virtually all ages, from 6-year-olds to folks in their 70s. I believe that people of all ages can benefit from getting in touch with their innate musical abilities. Regardless of age, there needs to be an alignment between my approach and the student’s learning style. The free consultation is an opportunity to assess that alignment, and I consistently hold space to discuss if it’s a good fit.

  • Though it’s true that people vary in how naturally attuned they are to pitch, in most cases people are able to identify and match pitch with some experience. More importantly, the world of music contains so many things - rhythm, color, sensation, text, and more - and our work will connect you to all of them, not just pitch. That being said, I bet with a little time and patience, you’ll discover you aren’t tone deaf, you just need some time to get in touch with your ear.

  • In short, yes! If you have a particular goal in mind, I’d love to talk about how I can help you reach it - and if I don’t think I’m a good fit, I’ll happily refer you elsewhere. For example, if you play guitar and want to improve your skills accompanying yourself singing, I’ll happily take you on. But if you want to learn how to play guitar, I’d refer you to a guitar teacher in my network, as they’d serve you best.

  • At the beginning of each month, everyone in the studio gets an email from me with perspectives on life and music, along with a highlighted artist, musical concept, and piece of creative philosophy. All this provides a backbone for your individualized study: we’ll listen to and learn from those artists, see how those musical concepts apply to the music you make, and draw wisdom by discussing the writings of fellow creatives.

  • My lessons cost $100 per hour-long session. Keep in mind that though we’re spending an hour together, I spend significant time outside of lessons preparing materials, developing curricula, and gathering resources in order to deliver real value to my students.
